Propinquity explores the power of closeness—both in physical form and human connection. Defined as the state of being near, whether in place, time, or relationship, Propinquity takes shape through intricate paper weavings that transform deconstructed original artworks into unified compositions. By meticulously cutting, layering, and weaving, Alison highlights the delicate balance between fragmentation and cohesion, revealing how separate pieces—like moments, relationships, or ideas—can intertwine to create something entirely new. Patterns emerge, edges meet, and colors interlock, echoing the way proximity shapes meaning and experience.
This solo exhibition showcases a striking collection of woven collages, each meticulously crafted from the artist’s own original paintings and works on paper. It will feature a signature weaving that will span approximately sixteen feet by fourteen feet. Through this process of deconstruction and reconstruction, Alison bridges spontaneity with structure, offering a glimpse into her fascination with transformation and materiality. The interplay of color, movement, and negative space encourages viewers to engage deeply, uncovering the hidden relationships between elements within each piece. Propinquity is both a meditation and an invitation to consider the unseen forces that connect us—not just in art, but in life itself.
Alison is a dedicated paper artist known for her contemporary approach to collage. A self-taught artist, she follows her intuition, allowing creativity to unfold organically. Inspired by arrangement, pattern, and repetition, Alison explores these elements by deconstructing her original artworks and reassembling them into intricate weavings or modern collages. Her work is designed to evoke joy and curiosity, inviting viewers to connect with the intricacies of her technique and the thoughtful energy infused into each piece. Alison works out of her studio, #113, at Silver Street Studios in Sawyer Yards.
