Solid State is Sculpture Month Houston's 8th exhibition at SITE Gallery (The Silos at Sawyer Yards). It refers to matter in its solid-state form. The other classical states being vapor, liquid, and plasma.
The materials to create sculptures and art in general have expanded explosively from classical marble or bronze to concrete, steel, plastic, found objects, resin, even organic materials and many more. The cornucopia of new materials has encouraged the reformulation of certain aspects of sculptural art and stimulated pathways and images we never thought of before.
This exhibition aims to explore the mind-boggling variety of sculptural possibilities. Yet, primarily it is a celebration of the material world and its solidity, providing us with assurances of a sturdy reality with a solid core. Or is that an illusion?
Great architecture has always celebrated the material world and created fabulous cultural landmarks like the Pyramids of Egypt. The Eiffel Tower made from industrial iron signaled the belief in progress leading to a bright and better future.
