Amy Kim: Wolfcamp Catalogue

Texas Photographic Society presents the 2022 TPS National Photography Award exhibition Wolfcamp Catalogue, a photo book and installation by Amy Kim from Lubbock, Texas, a faculty member and gallery director at UT Permian Basin in Odessa.

Amy Kim describes the project: My current project Wolfcamp Catalogue, a photo book and installation, focuses on the oil industry of the Permian Basin. This West Texas region, situated over the Wolfcamp Shale, is the world’s most lucrative oil and gas producer. The Catalogue visualizes the unrelenting developments, its ecological implications, and the population’s attitudes of American and West Texas pride. But with the growing elastic demand for oil, and unexpected shocks to the system, we find, more than ever, art’s urgent need to move beyond our “above ground” certainties, to excavate our “below ground” contradictions and desires.

The 2022 TPS National Photography Award was juried by Marni Shindelman, a photographer working in the collaborative team Larson Shindelman, and Associate Professor at the Lamar Dodd School of Art at the University of Georgia.

An opening reception will be held on Thursday, October 6, from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with
both Amy Kim and juror Marni Shindelman in attendance.

About Amy Kim -
Amy Kim is a full-time faculty member and director of gallery at UT Permian Basin Department of Arts in Odessa, Texas, with an MFA from Texas Tech University’s School of Art. She is an American-born Korean, and has lived in South Korea and Michigan, and currently resides in Lubbock, Texas. Amy's work has been exhibited at the CICA Museum, Seoul, South Korea; Ping-yao International Photography Festival, Ping-yao, China; and Charles Adams Studio Project, Lubbock, TX. She is one of ten recipients selected by the Society for Photographic Education for the 2017 Student Award for Innovation and Imaging.
