Join three of Houston’s most prominent poets from the immigrant community for an intimate poetry reading and storytelling performance. This free event is part of an initiative to uplift the voices of immigrants and first-generation Americans in Houston.

Alessandro Carrera is an Italian poet and translator. He is Director of Italian Studies and Graduate Director of World Cultures & Literatures at the University of Houston. Carrera has been the recipient of the Montale Prize for Poetry in 1993, the Loria Prize for short fiction in 1998, and the Bertolucci Prize for Literary Criticism in 2006. He has been knighted by the Italian government because of his artistic contributions, given the title “Cavaliere”.

A poet and literary event organizer, Gerald Cedillo attended the University of St. Thomas and studied Creative Writing at the University of Houston. He has taught theater, performance poetry, and writing. He has served on the board of Houston’s week-long poetry festival, The Word Around Town, and is a part of the writing group, The Balcony Poets.

Elina Petrova, an accomplished poet in her native Ukraine, began learning English in her mid-thirties. She has been featured in the Huffington Post as one of Houston’s important emerging poets (“Five Poets You Need to Know About”) and was appointed Austin International Poetry Fest’s Featured Poet in 2019.
