"The end of life has its own nature, also worth our attention.
I don’t say this without reckoning in the sorrow, the worry, the many diminishments. But surely it is then that a person’s character shines or glooms."
–Mary Oliver
Kathy Drago paints old-old women that she constructs by combining images collected from I-phone snapshots, social media posts, or grainy obituary photos. Sometimes the final painting resembles the person from one particular image, but more often, by incorporating different faces, bodies, clothing, and backgrounds, an imaginary person emerges. While painting, she thinks about each woman’s life story. Drawing on her background in theater arts she makes these paintings the way an actor builds a character, using the outer physicality to reveal inner emotions and motivations. She deeply feels that the accumulation of years tells a compelling story and has a beauty all its own.
Old Old Women is on view in the Bay 300 Gallery of the Silos at Sawyer Yards studio building, from January 2 - 30, 2025. The gallery is open to the public from 9 - 5pm Monday through Saturday.
